With the growing demands of information technology, and the emphasis on lifelong learning, it is becoming increasingly urgent that we help students develop the critical skills needed to help them manage information. The Faculty of Education at UPEI is unique in its promotion and support of the outcomes, standards, and ideals for information literacy as articulated in the Atlantic Provinces Educational Foundation (APEF) Documents. It fosters the development of these ideals in pre-service teachers by providing resources and the services of a trained teacher-librarian to co-ordinate its Education Learning Commons (ELC).

The ELC's collection has an impressive selection of professional literature; Methodology texts in a variety of subject areas, specifically chosen for pre-service teachers, help them prepare lesson plans needed to address a variety of learning styles by developing resource-based learning assignments. <<< top of page
Finding Web Resources - Find a listing of websites, organized under the categories of Academic/Research Information, Information for Classroom Teachers, and Information for New Teachers.
A teacher preparation area, with access to space and materials to prepare assignments, is also part of what the ELC has to offer. A photocopier, a laminator, a book binder, an Elison Letter machine, a Paper Cutter, plenty of cutting-up materials for posters, and lots of markers and other supplies are kept on hand for student use.
A TV/ VCR and a CD Player are housed here for students to use in class presentations.
The ELC also has COMPUTER access. The coordinator is a trained teacher-librarian who is able to help students integrate technological resources more effectively into the designing of resource-based learning classroom assignments and projects. ELC models how a school library program in Prince Edward Island schools works. It uses the Dewey Decimal System and is coordinated by a trained teacher-librarian.
The Education Learning Commons is also pleased to introduce Smarteacher, a virtual library of learning resources for teachers. All sites have been previewed for content and applicability for curriculum use. <<< top of page

Each September there are four student positions available for employment at the Education Learning Commons. Two first-year and two second-year students are hired to work evenings and weekends (each student works approximately six hours a week) throughout the year. Jobs are posted on the UPEI Human Resources site in late August.
