2011 EXCELLENCE IN WRITING COMPETITION

For this year's Excellence in Writing Competition, students were asked to submit papers on the topic of The University in the Age of Technology.  Modern technology has made us healthier, wealthier, and more powerful than any previous civilization.  But has it also made us wise?  The cultivation of wisdom was historically an essential feature of the university.  It was pursued by exporing the human good in both the humanities and physical sciences.  Modern universities increasingly pursue the goods recognized by technological society through research aimed at creating new technologies and teaching aimed at creating technologically minded citizens.

In this paper, students were asked to explore theses competing tendencies in order to clarify the nature of, and to critically assess, the modern university.  Students formulated their theses and arguments in relation to the course readings.

The purpose of these papers and tonight's public discuusion is to provide a student forum for reflecting on the key problems and concerns explored in Global Issues 151 this term.

Submissions were graded and ranked by a panel of jdges comprised of Global Issues instructors and full-time UPEI faculty members.  Papers were assessed on the bases of their relevance, creativity, originality, and critical insight.

This year's winners were Marina Atalla, Nigel Ogle and Rachel Robinson. Congratulations to you all.
